Midwinter, at the Three Crowns in St. Paul's Church Yard1719Volume I, (all published)A large and heavy folio volume, which has been rebound in 20thC crushed morocco. It measures approx 39.8cm x 27cm x 6.8cm. As can be seen from the images, the binding has some damp staining tot he top corner of the front board. The binding is also a bit surface worn and scuffed to the extremities. Top edges gilt. Else, the binding is good and firm. Internally, there are marbled endpapers to the front and rear. The engraved frontispiece and title page, have trimmed and laid down. As can be seen from the images, there is a corresponding pale stain to the top for edge corners to approximately the first half of the contents, lessening as it progresses. The leaves and plates have been trimmed to fore edges, including many of the plate edges/margin, some slightly affecting image edge. All the plates have been lined (laid down) on linen. There is some scattered light browning/foxing and some thumbing, with the odd scattered grubby mark or patchy brown mark. There is some margin creasing from folding plate pressure. The large engraved map is a little curled to edges, and is naturally a little worn (little tear to central junction fold) and creased around the central folds, see images. The panoramic view of Rochester has a large portion lacking from one corner and some loss and wear, a number of the plates also have some some damage, loss and wear, although, as stated, all plates have been lined to verso, to preserve further wear. The beautiful large folding map of Kent, is by Johannes Kip after Thomas Badeslade. It is extremely detailed, depicting all the villages, town, ports, and ships, and is surrounded by the arms of prominent families to margin. Includes further maps, and panoramic views of Rochester, and Chatham, and Tunbridge Wells.Some of the plates were engraved by Harris himself.
