"Three Years of Arctic Service: An Account of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition of 1881-84 and the Attainment of the Farthest North" is a 2 volume, 6.5"x9.5" hardcover set written by Adolphus W. Greely and published in 1886 by Charles Scribner's Sons (New York). Volume I has 428 pages (plus xxv, 16 plates and a folded map), while Vol. II has 444 pages (plus xiii and 26 plates). The author led the expedition to establish a meteorological-observation station in the Arctic, during which two of his company set a new record for being furthest north, and 18 of the 25 man crew perished. Besides the 42 plates, there are numerous illustrations in the text.The set is in acceptable condition, without dust jackets, and in later bindings. The brown cloth boards show soiling, turned-in corners, loss to the title labels on the spines, edge wear, a couple minor indentations along the top. Vol. II's front hinge is cracked. There's an 1887 ownership mark on the 2nd flyleaf in each volume, and Vol. I has a pencil marks to the front pastedown and ffep. The map pocket is detached, and the map has several chips and tears. The bindings are sturdy.
