A5 size paperback (N5599)This book provides a fascinating account of the castles and fortified Towers in Cumbria, and is illustrated throughout with lots of black and white photographs.From the rear side cover: This book is a comprehensive guide to the history and architecture of 120 castles and tower houses (often called pele towers) in Cumbria. Following an introduction describing the development of fortified buildings in Cumbria is a gazetteer illustrated with many plans and photographs. A list at the back gives summary information on another 90 sites including some places where little or noting now remains. Finally there is a section concerning the defensible farmhouses of c1590-1620 known as bastilles. Brief details and a few illustrations are given of a selection of about 30 of these little known buildings.The condition of the book is very good. The covers have one or two minor scuffs and some light wear along the edges, but the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
