Ampthill's Fallen, by John Hele
Book published by Ampthill History Forum in 2014, 149 pages. Paperback (N7619PE)
From the rear side cover: Ampthill has the unusual distinction of having two war memorials following the First World War. The reasons behind this are simple, but led to considerable discourse between the town and church. There are 67 names on the two main memorials in the town, but the names are not identical. The background to the war, the battles the men fought in and the stories behind each of the 67 men who died is given, together with facts and figures on how Ampthill fared compared with other local villages concerning casualties. Chapters in the book include:
Ampthill Roll of Honour The War Memorial Question The Alameda War Memorial St Andrew's Church War Memorial Methodist Church War Memorial Structure of the British Army in 1914 The Bedfordshire Regiment A Brief History of the First World War The Battles for Ypres The Somme Arras Gallipoli The Decisive Battles of 1918 The Use of Gas Recruitment Facts and Figures The Deaths of the men in date order Commonwealth War Graves Commission The men who died, their lives and deaths Endnotes
Condition of the book is generally very good. The covers are clean and bright, with only very light nibbling and wear along the edges and corners, the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
