The Book of Winscomber, A Changing Mendip Community, by Margaret TuckerPublished by Halsgrove in 2004, 160 pages. Large A4 size Hardback with Dust Jacket (N8503)From the inside front fly leaf: The small Mendip village of Winscombe is much changed since it was home to just a few hundred, mainly farming, folk in the late 1800s. The Book of Win scom be is a social history of that growing community, of the villagers themselves; how they have lived, worked and played through a period of enormous change. They not only experienced two world wars, but also adjusted to the revolution of new technologies and the hardships of the Great Depression of the 1920s and '30s. The story that emerges is one of compassion and tolerance, showing how people adapted and made the best of what they had - and managed to enjoy themselves whatever the circumstances. There are many light-hearted moments, some highlighting the vast differences between rural and town life, and the stories bring together countless memories drawn from villagers past and present, hopefully to be treasured by those of the future. The condition of the book is very good. The dust jacket is clean and bright, the spine is intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
