Willington, by Olive LingePublished by Tempus in 2005, 96 pages. Paperback (N82161X1)Brand New BookFrom the rear side cover: This fascinating selection of over 150 photographs recalls Willington's history, from a time when the coal industry was at the heart of the area's prosperity to today when it is just a memory. In Willington it is still possible to walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers on a road virtually unchanged. The name itself dates back to Saxon times but its real development came much later with the arrival of a Norman Lord at nearby Brancepeth. There he built his Manor House taking in Willington as part of his estate. In 1840 Straker and Love, two wealthy mine owners, brought prosperity to the village when they opened up the first pit. This lasted nearly 130 years, ending with the closure of the mines in 1967. However, Willington didn't die with the end of coal mining: it lives on. The photographs and illustrations in this book show a new generation how Willington and its people once were. To those older readers who have lived through a large part of this century, it will evoke some nostalgic memories of 'the good old days'. The book will delight anyone who has lived or grown up in Willington, as well as people with a more general interest in the social history of this part of County Durham and beyond...
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
