They were going to look at war, the red animal--war, the blood-swollen god. Here we offer the first edition, second year printing, of Stephen Crane's classic, The Red Badge of Courage, published by D. Appleton and Company, New York, in 1896. Perhaps never has such an intense account of war been told with such transcendence in such a simple and straightforward manner. Not a word is wasted or unnecessary in this central piece of the American literary canon. Features the first edition point of "draw" instead of "drew" on p. 132, line 24. The original book came wrapped in a highly-acidic dust jacket that degraded within a decade or so. This first edition comes wrapped in an acid-free professional facsimile of the first edition dust jacket that you can get only here, digitally remastered and printed with archival inks on a heavy dandelion beige sheet of ph-neutral, vellum-textured French art paper. Also included are collector's notes on the first edition.Buckram boards and spine are worn and stained (please see pics). Intact endpapers are uninscribed. Ad page preceding title page has been removed. Hinges are very secure. Binding is very tight and square. Text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 233 pages plus several rear pages of ads, which includes an uncut page (in those days, books were often sold with uncut edges, so that one would need to "open" every 8th page with a razor or letter opener as one read). Measures approximately 7.5 x 5-inches.
