THE BELGIAN ARMY IN THE GREAT WAR PART 2 PORTABLE SERVICE WEAPONSby Pierre Lierneux, Illustrated in colour, 512 pages, over 1,500 colour photographs, contemporary B&W photographs, tables and illustrations,
To write about the history of firearms without mentioning the reputation of the Belgian firearms industry would be ignoring the important place this country held in the field. The quantity and variety of weapons produced in Belgium and exported during the XIXth century was exceptional.
The production tool, but also the know-how and the ingenuity of the gunsmiths were naturally put at the service of the Belgian Army. Modest in numbers, the army disposed in 1914 of a decent individual armament, even if its concept was twenty years old. Well trained, the soldier could exploit to its maximum the long range precision of his weapon. However, the small numbers of automatic weapons, recently purchased, would prove a serious handicap when vastly outnumbered by the enemy.
The battle for the Ijzer, saving a small portion of the national territory, saw the end of the war of manoeuvring. The war years saw the government and the rear echelons multiply their efforts and ingenuity to insure the soldier in the front line was correctly armed. On top of numerous adaptations to existing material, there was a large diversification in the origins of the equipment fielded. Photographs of the Belgian front allow the identification of weapons from France, the United Kingdom, United States as well as Germany and Turkey amongst others, weapons used as built or modified to suit the needs of the army.
With the complexity of the subject, the masses of fresh information and photographs available, a second volume dedicated to the small arms was deemed necessary to complete the overview of the Belgian Army during the Great War. Once again the collections of the Royal Military Museum of Brussels reveal their wealth and diversity. Much more than a simple catalogue of weapons used by the Belgian Army, it is the story of the transformation of a small army caught in the struggles of the Great War, its adaptation to technological and tactical progress.
All books are entirely in English unless noted otherwise. I combine purchases and the rate goes way down after the first book purchased. International orders billed at cost. I will ship anywhere in the world. If you have any questions about payment options please contact me. I SHIP ANYWHERE ON THIS PLANET.Be assured, though I may not always have the lowest price, you will not get any cheap bookclub editions from me on ebay. I've been selling books for many many years and I can spot cheap bookclubs a mile away. Hand me a book and I'll tell you straight off if it's a bookclub edition. Sometimes it can be hard for most booksellers to know if it's a bookclub, like university press books. They don't normally put the price on the jacket for the publisher's edition, but most of them do use full or partial cloth binding, whereas the bookclub edition will be simply cheap board covers. Though let's face it, most of the publisher's editions these days aren't all that great in quality either, the bookclubs are even worse! Please look at my ebay store where many similar titles are available.
