Description Featuring works from three of contemporary artist Luis Jacob's recent exhibitions in Canada, this book focuses on the art museum as the frame, influencing the way the audience views and interprets the art. It questions what lies behind the picture and proposes another dimension to art that is the viewer's encounter with it.
Publisher Description
Toronto-based artist Luis Jacob has been creating conceptual art for 20 years, mostly photography and performance. Jacob has concentrated a large amount of his work on 'seeing art' or rather how we see art. The artist here discusses the concept of a museum and the relationship between art and life. His work explores authenticity in pictorial representation, the legacy of modern art, the self and the other, as such his works call on the viewer to consider what lies beneath the surface of the picture. Seeing and Believing features an essay written by Luis Jacob discussing his work in relation to recent art history and the debate on the gallery and contemporary art history. This illustrated essay entitled "Groundless in the Museum: Anarchism and the Living Work of Art", contextualises contemporary art from the work of Robert Smithson and site-specific work from the 1960s. The book also includes plate sections of Jacob's recent exhibitions: Tableaux Vivants, Fonderie Darling Foundry, Montreal; Pictures at an Exhibition, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; and The Eye, The Hole, The Picture, Musee McCord, Montreal. Each documents Jacob's exhibition installations in full and provides a unique view of the work of this intriguing artist. AUTHOR: Luis Jacob lives in Toronto, Canada. Working as artist, curator, and writer, his diverse practice addresses issues of social interaction and the subjectivity of aesthetic experience. Solo exhibitions include: Pictures at an Exhibition, Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto); Without Persons, Art in General (New York City); Tableaux Vivants, Fonderie Darling Foundry (Montreal); Group exhibitions include: Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, at the Solomon R. SELLING POINTS: Seeing and Believing is an illustrated review of the work of contemporary Canadian artist Luis Jacob and a discussion on the nature of the museum and site-specificity in modern and contemporary art. Seeing and Believing is the first comprehensive look at the work of conceptual artist Luis Jacob. Jacob has concentrated his work on the concept of 'seeing art' and as such this collection joins the debate on the position of the museum and viewer in contemporary art. Seeing and Believing includes three exhibition/installations catalogues of Luis Jacob's work and a written essay by the artist himself contextualising the work. ILLUSTRATIONS: 150 colour & b/w
