Large A4 size Hardback with Dust Jacket (N6025X1)Brand New BookFrom the front inside fly leaf: The village of Sculthorpe near the market town of Fakenham in North Norfolk has a long and exciting history: Bronze-Age and Viking artefacts have been unearthed in the vicinity, Roman soldiers once marched through the village and during the Middle Ages pilgrims, including English kings, passed along the Green Way to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. In 1381 Sir Robert Knollys, a commander in the Hundred Years War and servant of Edward the Black Prince, built a fortified manor-house here and rebuilt the Parish Church. During the 1600s Sculthorpe's rector, Dr John Quarles, also Archdeacon of Northampton, raised his motherless children here during the tumultuous Civil War. In 1721 Cranmer Hall was built on the site of his old family home; it became the centre of the Cranmer Hall Estate, which lasted until 1946. The village lost much common land follow­ing an Enclosure Act of 1829 but retained Turf Moor, a haven for wildlife; it is home to the Marsh Harrier, now protected by the Hawk and Owl Trust.
