It originates from a multi-year initiative commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the formation of the African American Student Union at Howard Business School (HBS), which provides an opportunity to examine the experiences of black professional across a broad spectrum of organizations. Contributions come from scholars from leadership psychology, organizational behavior, sociology, and education. Section One opens with Henry Louis Gates, Jr’s speech in April 2018, examining the determination and actions of five HSB students who banded together in 1968 to change the landscape for African-Americans at HSB. Section two examines race through the lens of comparative studies. Section three: Phenomenology uses a qualitative approach that emphasizes the lived experience and meaning of a phenomenon, and forms the third and largest grouping of studies in this book. Section four challenges historical management theories from a structural perspective, by utilizing a lens of intersectionality to bring to center the intersection of race with gender and social class, and by taking strength and a strengthening perspective, which contrasts with the typical portrayal of African Americans from a deficiency perspective.
