Casling's was a Northern European voice, reminiscent of Transtromer and Rilke. He believed poetry spoke from the soul and for him the soul was rooted in the commonplace. Throughout this compelling book, he deals with serious issues with a lightness of touch and a generosity of spirit. Dennis Casling was blind and as a poet he described what he saw working from visual memory, the imagination and often from dream-like states. He said: 'The act of seeing is informed by the imagination. I am not distracted by the visual. I spend my time looking at the invisible.'

Dennis Casling read English at Nottingham University and took and MA in Medieval Studies at Bristol. He worked as a schoolteacher, college lecturer and finally a consultant and trainer in the fields of Social Care, Education and the Arts. He was overall winner of the Poetry Business Competition (2000) for his collection, Endorphin Angels, which became a Poetry Book Society Recommendation in 2001. He continued to publish in poetry magazines, including The North, Rialto, Poetry London and Poetry Review until his death in 2016.
