"This thought-provoking volume gives a boost to debates about social remittances. Through solid ethnography and critical theorizing, the authors demonstrate both the potential and the pitfalls of this influential and seductive concept. The chapters locate social remittances within the wider socio-cultural dynamics of migration, examining a range of transnational connections within and beyond Europe. (Jorgen Carling, Peace Research Institute Oslo, Norway) "A fresh investigation into the ways in which migration, globalisation and Europe interact, examined through the lens of social remittances. The authors skillfully show how understanding the local meaning of remitting helps illuminate global processes of social change. An excellent resource for students and scholars alike, this collection contributes to balancing the North American scholarship on social remittances, whilst highlighting the need for a Global South-centred approach." (Julie Vullnetari, University of Southampton, UK) "This book makes an important contribution to the multidisciplinary discussions about social remittances. Nowicka and Serbedzija contextualize and clarify the amorphous concept and map its wide empirical range through a series of case studies. They rightly emphasize the importance of social network analysis for a better understanding of the conditions that shape remittance circulation over time." (Gwendolyn Sasse, University of Oxford, UK)
