Migration, Agency and Citizenship in Sex Trafficking, Hardcover by Andrijasevic, Rutvica, ISBN 0230237401, ISBN-13 9780230237407, Like New Used, Free P&P in the UKFor this study, Andrijasevic (politics, The Open University, UK) interviewed a number of women from Eastern Europe who were working or had worked in the sex trade in Italy. She concentrates on the many different reasons for the women to have migrated, generally illegally, and the extent of their knowledge about the work they would be doing. Her goal is to point out the inadequacies in EU policies towards illegal immigrants and especially the protection of those involved in prostitution under the control of a third party. However, much more intriguing is the psychology of the women. Most do not define themselves as whores, even though they trade sex for money. Many have a romantic notion of being saved by a good man. The fact that many of the women were abused by family members is one that came out only slowly in the course of the interviews and their unwillingness to speak of this is an important factor in understanding them. Andrijasevic combines class and gender issues with political matters to create a nuanced study of a problem too often seen only in black and white. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR ()
