The Longdendale Valley, by Margaret BuxtonPublished by Tempus in 2004, 128 pages. Paperback (N7062X1)Brand New BookFrom the rear side cover: The Longdendale Valley stretches from the eastern outskirts of Manchester, through the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth, Hadfield and Tintwhistle and via reservoirs and open moors to Crowden and the Yorkshire border. It is a windswept region and one that has witnessed successions of historical events as they took place along this important route between Lancashire and Yorkshire. The Romans used it and built forts, the industrialists built mills and the Luddites tried to smash them, engineers built reservoirs and the largest railway tunnel of the day to take trains across the Pennines at Woodhead. The valley is still a busy road route but now attracts more naturalists and walkers than industrialists. This fascinating collection of photographs of the valley over the years was selected largely from the work of photographer Harry Buxton (1908-1983). He lived in Hadfield and worked as a local press photographer for most of his life, recording people, incidents and the landscape of his home area. He also collected and copied earlier photographs, some of which also appear here in this selection put together and described by his daughter Margaret Buxton...The book will delight anyone who has lived or grown up in and around the Longdendale Valley, as well as people with a more general interest in the social history of this part of Derbyshire, Lancashire and beyond...
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
