Schirmer's Collection of Opera Librettos, Ed. 2415[FRONT MATTER]"Though the mood of L'Elisir d'Amore is bright, Gaetano Donizetti's own life story was not correspondingly happy. He was born into poverty at Bergamo on November 29, 1797. (...)There came a brief stretch in the army, followed by his long, slow rise as a composer. (...) It was only with his thirty-third [opera], Anna Bolena (1830), that significant note was taken of this talent. Then, two years later, came L'Elisir d'Amore, the work that made him famous. For the libretto of L'Elisir d'Amore, Donizetti had recourse to a well-known Italian poet, Felice Romani (1788-1865), Genoese by birth, volatile by temperament, remembered especially for his association with Bellini in Il Pirata, La Sonnambula and Norma. The verses of Romani are polished and expertly turned; but his plots, in the main, make no pretense at originality, being derived from successful French stage works of the period. (...) [F]or the book of L'Elisir d'Amore he went to a score by the distinguished French composer, Daniel François Auber, called Le Philtre. (...)The story of Le Philtre is carried over into L'Elisir d'Amore practically scene for scene, often line for line[.](...) The ribbing taken by the Tristan legend, along with the whole idea of the magic potion, is all the more amusing for today's listeners in that it was dreamed up by Scribe before the two celebrated lovers were even a flash in Wagner's eye."#LePhiltre #collectiblebooks #bibliophile #GaetanoDonizetti #instabooks #Opera #FeliceRomani #bookcollecting #instaread #ElixirOfLove #booksforsale #LElisirDAmore #ThomasMartin #BooksBooksBooks #ClassicalMusic #Bookworm #RuthMartin #CuttleboneBooks #booksale #instabooks #Opera #Antiquarian #Donizetti #Vintage #Libretto #readersofinstagram #Books #Bookstagram #Gschirmer #ComicOpera
