The Controversy of John Hampden's Death, by Derek Lister and Gill Blackshaw
Booklet published by the Chalgrove Battle Group in 2000, 36 pages. A5 size booklet (N7670)
John Hampden was an English landowner whose opposition to taxes imposed by Charles I made him an important figure within the parliamentary opposition to the King. An ally of John Pym and cousin to Oliver Cromwell, he was one of the Five Members whose attempted arrest in January 1642 sparked the English Civil War, and after the conflict began he raised an infantry regiment, subsequently dying from wounds received at the Battle of Chalgrove Field on 18 June 1643. This booklet examines the controversy surrounding his death. From the first inside page: Ever since the 19th Century there has been a furious debate as to how John Hampden received his fatal wound at Chalgrove Field in 1643. Did he suffer a shoulder wound inflicted by a Cavalier's pistol in the heat of battle, or did his weapon explode and shatter his hand? This book sets forth the evidence for both scenarios and a conclusion has been drawn from the wide research undertaken....
The condition of the booklet is generally very good. The covers have one or two minor scuffs but are clean and bright, the staple spine is intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a small price sticker on the rear side cover.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
