From Back cover about the author: Dr Leslie LaVonne Jackson has a PHD in United States history from Harvard University, Master of arts degree in African-American studies US history from Clark Atlanta University, and a Bachelors of arts in political science from the University of Texas at Arlington. She's currently professor of African American studies at Howard University. Dr. Jackson specializes in 19th century history with an emphasis on slavery, the civil war, and the Reconstruction era. Dr. Jackson serves as executive director for American heritage and culture society, a nonprofit organization that serves as a Clearinghouse to provide research services on issues and topics relevant to the African experience in America. She has worked as a historian for the United States department of interior, national register of historic places where she co-edited a book entitled African American historic places in the national register. She is also contributed essays to several publications, including Black women in America an Historical encyclopedia, the encyclopedia of Malcolm X, and Teaching with Historic Places: heritage education resources exchange.
