Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and very recently obtained in Tokyo is another great periodical focused primarily on 1/700 waterline ship modeling: “Model Art Modeling Magazine Special No. 36, JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIER HOSHO, RYUJO”,  Summer 2010.

This superb series published by Model Art, one of Japan’s premier publishers, is a large-format, quarterly publication that focuses on a few ships/kits with a focus on a particular ship or class of ships.  In this case, the focus is on two of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s ‘light’ carriers, the HOSHO and RYUJO, both of which saw extensive action especially in the first part of World War II.  It features these two carriers in a number of kit builds, including the RYUJO in 1933, 1934, 1935, and 1942; and the HOSHO in 1922, 1941, and 1944. Note that both these carriers underwent extensive modifications during their lives as they transitioned from serving as ‘concept’ carriers to undergoing the realities of combat.  Lots of photographs of the kit builds, line drawings, period b/w photographs, and a multi-page color foldout painting of the two carriers by famed Japanese military artist Y. Mizuno.  Other ships covered in this volume include the USS WASP (LHD-1), USS BOXER (LPH-4), USS IWO JIMA (LPH-2), USS TARAWA (LHA-1), and USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19), and these are accompanied by a short rundown on US Amphibious Assault ships.  But the focus is on the HOSHO and RYUJO -- this publication is an absolute must-have for any advanced 1/700 waterline ship modeler.
