Great British Trans, by O.S. Nock
Published by Pelham in 1985, 212 pages. Hardback with Dust Jacket, c.18cm by 25cm (A14K)
From the inside front fly leaf: This is a story of the time before the private motor car and the internal airlines had supplanted the train as the premier means of long-distance travel in Great Britain. The Royal Scot', The Golden Arrow', The 'Queen of Scots' Pullman, and the 'Torbay Limited' were symbolic of leisured daytime travel for the passengers if not for the engine crews and the names alone are enough to revive memories and stir the imagination. In recalling those days one thinks of the innumerable preliminaries, asides, and incidents that went to make up a main line railway journey; and to the author looking back over threequarters of a century of such experience those memories certainly come crowding. In committing them to paper an attempt has been made to provide something for all those who love railways. There is plenty about locomotives and carriages, much of the passing scene, points about architecture, railway history and archaeology, not forgetting the vignettes of fellow travellers and railwaymen. So far as the trains themselves are concerned the author has divided them into three broad categories; the first dealing with trains the character of which belongs essentially to the days before the first world war; the second concerning the inter-war period, and the first signs of the passing of the old elegance, and the third, the first essays into the breathless modern age. The illustrations, particularly the reproductions in colour of early contemporary picture postcards, revive the atmosphere of the old railways, and of their magnificent engine and carriage liveries. The condition of the book is generally good. The dust jacket has some minor scuffs, and light wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact, and all pages are intact and tightly bound. There is some very light foxing to the first few inside pages.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
