The Peculiarities of German History - Bourgeois Society and Politics in Nineteenth Century Germany, by David Blackbourn and Geoff Eley
Published by Oxford University Press in 1984, 300 pages. Paperback (S8295N)
From the rear side cover: This book is a major re-evaluation of the cultural, political, and sociological assumptions which have been held to dlstlngulsh the 'peculiar' course of modern German history from that of other western nations. Dealing with many familiar arguments-the special character of the German Mind, the German lack of political maturity, the feudalization of the German bourgeoisie-the authors reconsider especially the view that the economic modernization of Germany was accompanied by the survival of deep-seated, pre-modern social values and political structures, because of its failure to pass through a bourgeois revolution. The present work is a revised and much-expanded version of the same authors' My then deutscher Geschichtsschreibung (Frankfurt 1980), which prompted wide debate in historical circles and the press. For this book both authors have translated, revised, and extended their contributions, and have added a substantial introduction placing their work in the context of current discussion and considering some of the contemporary issues raised by writing on modern German history.
The condition of the book is generally good. The cover has several minor scuffs, and light wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
