Description Cuentos de la Alhambra es una novela de Washington Irving escrita en 1829 que se publicó con el título "Conjunto de cuentos y bosquejos sobre Moros y Españoles" en 1832. Esta original novela entremezcla una serie de narraciones o cuentos con el libro de viajes y el diario. El protagonista e hilo conductor es el propio autor, Washington Irving, que tras su llegada a España inicia un recorrido por tierras andaluzas que le llevan a Granada. Allí queda extasiado por la majestuosidad de la Alhambra en cuyas habitaciones se hospedará. Durante su estancia conoce a varios personajes, entre los que hay que destacar al que se convierte en su criado, Mateo Jiménez, que le acompañarán y le darán noticia de esos cuentos y leyendas que giran en torno al monumento y su pasado árabe.

Author Biography

Washington Irving fue el primer norteamericano en alcanzar la celebridad como escritor profesional, gracias a la literatura, y por eso numerosas calles y ciudades de los Estados Unidos llevan su nombre. Es considerado como el mentor de autores como Nathaniel Hawthorne, el también hispanista Henry Wadsworth Longfellow y Edgar Allan Poe. Irving popularizó además el sobrenombre Gotham para referirse a Nueva York, usado en las historietas de Batman; también se le pretende inventor de la expresión el todopoderoso dólar. Tuvo una gran influencia en la visión exótica y orientalista de España.
