British Rail - The First 25 Years, by Michael R Bonavia
Published by David & Charles in 1981, 239 pages. Hardback with Dust Jacket - c.14cm by 22cm (A57M)
From the front inside fly leaf: TIt is perhaps inevitable that British Railways, the nationalised rail network which came into being in January 1948, has to bear far greater public scrutiny and criticism than any other industry. The creation of the new organisation, taking over from the grouping companies a run down system after heavy wartime use and neglected maintenance, brought immense problems, not the least being an unwieldy administration and a stubborn persistence with steam traction. The trials and tribulations, the successes and failures of British Rail are discussed in this history, the first really comprehensive survey of BR covering the first quarter-century since nationalisation. The book is divided into two main sections. The first covers the mainstream of events from 1948 to 1972, with chapters dealing with the early problems of the changeover, the 'Indian Summer' of steam traction under the Railway Executive, the genesis of the Modernisation Plan of 1955, the Beeching 'Re-shaping', the transformation of BR in the 1960s with the emergence of the Inter-City concept and Freightliner, the approach to the new age of the High Speed Train and Advanced Passenger Train, and finally the new relationship with the Government, based on financial support for socially necessary rail services which cannot pay their way. The second section considers special aspects of railway work since nationalisation.
The condition of the book is generally good. The dust jacket has several scuffs, blemishes and marks, and creasing and wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is colour fading along the left hand edge and outside spine of the dust jacket.
When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
