Already old, by 904 it had become one of the manors of the bishops of Winchester, and after the Norman Conquest, Bishop Henri de Blois built his palace and developed the town on a grid pattern that is still apparent today. In 1644 Parliamentary forces captured and plundered the palace, and the character of Bishop’s Waltham changed. The 18th century brought the excitement of the Waltham Blacks, a notorious gang of deer stealers, and the early 19th century brought famous French and Spanish prisoners on parole....This book is a fascinating history of the town over the centuries, and is illustrated throughout with lots of photographs, drawings and maps.
