Review
With Beyond Tolerance, Dierdre Glenn Paul illustrates that the whole of America is more complex than the sum of its parts. With the increased ethnic and linguistic diversity present in our schools, and the majority of educators non-representative of their students' multiethnic backgrounds, Glenn Paul offers a solution to the challenge of teaching literacy in post-racial America: Reading and discussing multiethnic children's literature reflective and inclusive of all cultures. An essential tool for all educators, from pre-service to veteran, this visionary text projects a optimistic message about the importance of creating a community of learners to examine modern issues of race and identity. A comprehensive historical overview of ethnic exclusion is woven seamlessly throughout. Specifically addressed is the current dilemma facing New Jersey's apartheid school districts in urban centers, which adds to the urgency of her message. Beyond Tolerance is indeed that: an honest, pragmatic approach that empowers teachers to be the facilitators of social change for future generations. It merits a place of distinction in every teacher's professional library. -- Maggie Churchill, ESL Coordinator, Closter Public SchoolsIn Beyond Tolerance: Real World Literacy Teaching and Learning for PreK-6, Dierdre Glenn Paul discusses "America's" relationship with its public schools, wide-ranging education policies, and countless literacy efforts to educate all students. Written to create positive and sustained social change through what Glenn Paul calls, "multiethnic children's literature," her voice is fittingly audible throughout the book. Poignant quotes open each chapter followed by rationale, recommendations, resources, or instructional strategies. At this time in our country's existence, Glenn Paul's attention to Black male students' literacy development is especially welcome. Whether read from cover-to-cover or à la carte—Glenn Paul says either is fine—teachers, caregivers of young learners, and education stakeholders are sure to find something useful. -- Danne Davis, associate professor, department of early childhood elementary and literacy education, Montclair State University
