This very rare Welsh language old antiquarian book, which is probably a first edition 1839, (no edition number) is a memoir of the life of Christmas Evans by W Morgan.
A collected mostly from his Christmas Evans's own writings and records.
Published in 1889 by LL Jenkins. Cardiff, in the Welsh language.
Hard cover, 438 pages, appx. 220mm x 135mm x 45mm. Binding is secure, a little dog ear on corners, with cover detached from binding. The rear page content/sermon is detached. Pages show some sign of fading, however text is clear and prominent.
Inside front cover inscribed 'Humphry Jones his book 1840, gift to Wm Griffiths, Talabont Mill 1840. Humphry Jones his book' – the original owner of the book, which has been passed down through the family. Inscribed on the rear flyleaf 'Humphrey Jones, Penpompren Mill, his Book 1840 (scribble lines).
Condition fair/good considering age, and very collectable.
Christmas Evans (1766-1838), was one of the most famous Welsh preachers, born in Llandysul, Cardiganshire. He had lost an eye as a young man. His genius at preaching took him to North and South Wales. He was a preacher and learned man.
