Written by Will. Y. Darling. Published by Robert Grant & Son, Edinburgh. This is the “collected” edition of two of Darling’s works; The Private Papers of a Bankrupt Bookseller (1931) and The Bankrupt Bookseller Speaks Again (1938). It is the first edition of the collected work and was printed in 1947.

These two books are a kind of curmudgeonly discourse on England and English society in the times between the two wars. There is a lot of discussion of books, literature, the first World War and politics. The first book, written anonymously, was very popular in its time. They still make fairly interesting reading today.

Sir William Young Darling CBE FRSE LLD MC (8 May 1885 – 4 February 1962) was the Unionist Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons for the Edinburgh South constituency from 1945 to 1957. He was a director of the Royal Bank of Scotland from 1942 to 1957.

CONDITION:

This hard-cover book is in good condition. There is no dust jacket. The orange cloth hardcover shows mild wear at the corners and spine ends. The spine is cocked and faded. There is an inked name and date on the front endpaper. A penciled quotation is written on the rear endpaper. The interior is otherwise clean with no major, marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is slightly toned with age. Thefront hinge is cracked in the top half and there are a couple cracks in the binding, but overall the book is holding together well and capable of being read—a reading copy after all. There are no loose or missing pages.
